Dr. Rajat Rawat MBBS, MD Medicine, DM Cardiology talks about ways in which you can reduce your risk of getting a heart attack.

Heart Healthy living is a new concept that involves understanding your risk, making healthy choices and taking steps to reduce your chances of getting a heart disease/ coronary artery disease or bloackages in the heart.

You can lower your risk of developing heart diseases and also improve your overall health and well being by taking care of the below points:

  1. Control your cholesterol level/ Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar levels: get your Lipid Profile done, get your blood pressure reading taken and get a blood sugar level determined, if you haven’t done it before. Finding the enemy early and sorting it out, will lead to a much better outcome and can avoid future mishaps due to these enemies of your heart.
  2. Eat a Healthy Diet: Make healthy food choices, like more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low fat dairy products. Eat less salt, saturated fat and less added sugar and salt.
  3. Move More, Sit less: Sitting is the new smoking. Get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week, plus muscle strengthening activities for 2 days a week.
  4. IF you’re a smoker, Quit Smoking.
  5. Reduce Stress: This should probably be written way above. It has been seen that periods of excessive and pervasive stress can result in direct effects on the health, such as high blood pressure and higher cholesterol levels.
  6. Get enough and good quality sleep.
  7. Take Medicines as directed and never miss medications without consultation of a doctor. If you take medications to treat high cholesterol or high blood pressure or raised blood sugar levels, it is all the more important.
  8. Choose your drinks wisely. Substitute water for sugary drinks to reduce calories. Try and Quit alcohol, even if you take only a small amount. In the INTER-HEART study it has been shown that even a negligible amount of alcohol is bad for south asians.
