First the cause of palpitations need to determined. The palpitations may be due to a very serious problem, and sometimes due to a seemingly benign one.
Common causes of palpitations include:

If the heart Rate is too rapid or fast- medications for the same to control it needs to be given , and cause for rapid heart rate needs to established- which is done the cardiologist.
If the heart beat is too slow, then medications to increase the heart rate may be given.
If the heart rate is too slow, that may cause problem or be life threatening then a temporary pacemaker may have to be given as an emergency measure while the cause is determined whether reversible Or irreversible. If the slow heart rate is seemingly irreversible or has the potential to recur then a permanent pacemaker may be needed for the long term.
