Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a less common form of cardiomyopathy (disease of muscle of the heart) in which there is obstruction to LV outflow tract causing significant pressure in the left ventricle causing severe hypertrophy (thickening of the muscle) followed eventually by decrease ejection fraction (pumping power) of the heart.
HOCM (Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy) is a major cause of sudden cardiac death especially in the young population.
Patient of HOCM should have annual Echo check up for gradients, annual Holter for runs of NSVT and even a Coronary angiogram.
Previously there was not a lot of treatment available for HOCM except for beta blockers, some diuretics if Heart Failure was suspected.
