2D echo is a non-invasive test that your doctor or cardiologist would prescribe to check for underlying problems in your heart.

It is a painless test- which what most patients would like to know first.

The next question that arises, is whether one needs to be fasting for 2D echo?

The answer is simple- No. You can take a nice little meal, or your usual meal if you feel like it, there is no need to be fasting for echocardiography, unless and until stated specifically by your doctor- if he/she would like to do transesophageal echocardiography along with that.

Why is an echo done?

See, the answer is- to look at heart from most aspects one needs a multimodality approach.

The ECG looks at the electrical activity of the heart, angiography tells us about the blockages one may have.

Similarly, echocardiogram/ #Echo tells us a wide variety of things-

1. The pumping power and function of the heart

2. How is the diastolic (relaxation) function of the heart

3. Are there any valve problems – leakage or stenosis

4. Are there any wall motion abnormalities – which gives a clue whether any critical blockages are present or not.

5. Limited views might even show any ascending aorta dissection

6. Echo even shows whether there is any abnormal collection of fluid around the heart – like a pericardial effusion and whether it needs to be drained.

7. Echo may be the first test to give a clue of any malignancy of the heart

8. Any valve infection

9. Any congenital problems in the heart – like hole in the heart – like atrial septal defect or ventricular septal defect or pda

10. Echo is necessary post MI to check for any mechanical complications of the heart.

11. In cases of shortness of breath – it is a good way to determine whether patient has heart failure with reduced EF or with preserved EF and to guide therapy.

12. Pulmonary hypertension diagnosis

13. Any presence of thrombus / vegetations which gives a clue at what might be the cause of stroke. This is why echo is very important in all cases of stroke and cva.

14. Echo can also give a clue for niche diagnosis like amyloidosis etc.

15. There many number of things that one might see in echo apart from the already mentioned problems.

As you can see, echo tells the most number of things. A lot of cardiologists would prefer this test, if this is the only test one could do- as this is the test that gives the most information.

Who should do an echo test?

Only a cardiologist as they are the only healthcare professionals that are trained and have enough experience to deduce the information obtained from an echo.
